History of the United Kingdom

From bustling urban metropolises to breathtaking green countryside, the fascinating United Kingdom is a historic state rich in culture and diversity. The United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, which is the only portion of the United Kingdom that has a land border with another sovereign state, the Republic of Ireland.

Talking about the history of the UK, the Celtic people began to establish their culture around 600 BCE, when the first settlers arrived in the United Kingdom. Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire then invaded the United Kingdom. In roughly 55 BCE, the city of Londoninum was founded, which later became the UK's present capital city, London. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the Saxons, Vikings, and finally the Normans conquered the United Kingdom.

Under King Edward I, the English conquered Wales in the 13th century, and the two countries were reunited 300 years later. When the king of Scotland became King James I of England in 1602, Scotland became a component of the British throne. In 1801, Ireland became a part of the union, but many Irish rebelled, kicking off a tumultuous relationship between England and Ireland. In 1921, the southern part of Ireland was declared a distinct country and an Irish free state, but political violence between Southern Ireland and the United Kingdom persisted throughout the twentieth century, peaking in the 1960s and 1970s during a period of unrest dubbed "The Troubles."

The British Empire encompassed nearly a quarter of the earth's area at its peak in the nineteenth century, but World War I reduced the United Kingdom's influence over the colonies. However, as the last western European nation to oppose Germany in World War II, the United Kingdom, led by Winston Churchill, played a critical role in defeating Hitler.

After a 2016 public vote, 51.9 percent of voters chose to leave the European Union, the United Kingdom is now in the midst of a lengthy process to leave the EU.

Culture of the United Kingdom

While numerous influences have impacted the culture of the United Kingdom, the traditions and practises of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are quite different, with British culture as a whole keeping characteristics from each nation. Music and dance, for example, are examples of regional culture, as each state has its own unique dance form. Of course, Irish dancing is one of the most well-known, with Irish jigs remaining a popular dance style in the United Kingdom.

The British monarchy is a significant unifying influence for the four countries, with residents adoring members of the Royal Family. While many Britons are fascinated by the monarchy, it is one manifestation of the United Kingdom's deeply ingrained class system, which includes classes ranging from the working class to the aristocracy. The British, in general, take pleasure in their civility, with manners and etiquette playing a significant role in their culture.

The United Kingdom has been dubbed a "culture superpower," with a plethora of talented writers, artists, and musicians sharing their gifts. Many of the world's greatest authors, including William Shakespeare, Jane Austin, and, more recently, J.K Rowling, were British. Furthermore, many influential musicians were British, with many 20th century musicians dominating popular culture throughout the 1960s and 1970s "British invasion." Pink Floyd, Elton John, Queen, and The Rolling Stones are just a few of the artists who have transformed the course of music history and entrenched Britain's significant influence on popular culture.

The eclectic UK provides something for everyone, from Henry VII to Hogwarts, The Beatles to Braveheart.
